This is an electronic version of the paper presented at the 5th WSEAS international conference on Simulation, modelling and optimization, held in Corfu Island on 2005Neural networks for classification require our choosing output codes. Most often, the 1-of-c output code is used, with as many dimensions as classes. This coding scheme can turn into a burden for datasets with many classes such as the 19 class UCI soybean problem. In this paper, a procedure is introduced which allows to choose the number of output units of a neural network, independently of the number of classes. The weights of the network are learned by means of an evolution strategy whose fitness is the number of misclassifications incurred by assigning patterns to the class of the closest projected mean. In this way, we obtain two-dimensional views of multiclass problems such as the 19-class soybean database and the non-linear 6-class satellite problem

Early detection and management of the high-risk patient with elevated blood pressure

Severe or important blood pressure elevations are associated with the risk of cardiovascular disease. However, a significant proportion of myocardial infarctions and strokes occur in subjects with only slight elevations or even with normal blood pressure. Both the coexistence of other cardiovascular risk factors, such as diabetes or dyslipidemia, or those recently recognized, such as elevations of C-reactive protein or abdominal obesity and metabolic syndrome, or the presence of target organ damage, such as microalbuminuria, left ventricular hypertrophy, mild renal dysfunction or increased intima-media thickness, all indicate the existence of a high cardiovascular risk in mild hypertensives or in subjects with normal or high-normal blood pressure. Unfortunately, these high-risk patients are often not recognized and thus under-treated

The goal is to find the minimum number of control actions that solve the identified limit violations at minimum cost. A recombination operator based on form theory allows the codification of control actions in a natural and simple way. ECPA has been tested on the IEEE 30-bus and the IEEE 118-bus systems. The limit violations are solved at minimum cost and with fewer control actions on average than alternative methods

This paper focuses on the study and analysis of a scarcely studied phenomenon: that of the “consequences of migration” in the area where migration itself originates. Namely, the case of Plan 3000 in Santa Cruz de la Sierra (Bolivia) where a significant migration process from this country to –mostly– Spain was registered between 1990 up to almost the end of 2010. The research intends to be a contribution to knowledge related to the case under study which is interpreted in the light of concepts such as "migratory culture," "feeling of relative deprivation" and "transnationalism.Este trabalho está localizado no estudo e análise de um fenômeno relativamente pouco investigada; que das "consequências da migração", no lugar de sua origem. Effects of Eprosartan on Target Organ Protection

Hypertension is the most important cardiovascular risk factor for stroke. Blood pressure reduction by antihypertensive treatment is clearly efficacious in the prevention of stroke (both primary and secondary), although no clear differences have yet been observed between antihypertensive drug classes. However, a recent study reported the clear superiority of the angiotensin-receptor blocker eprosartan over the calcium channel blocker nitrendipine in cardiovascular protection of hypertensive patients with a previous stroke. Comparative studies using angiotensin-receptor blockers have also suggested the superiority of this class of drugs on primary stroke prevention. This effect may be linked to their beneficial actions on left ventricular hypertrophy, atrial enlargement, and supraventricular arrhythmias, endothelial dysfunction, inflammation, and remodelling, as well as a direct neuroprotective effect mediated through the stimulation of the angiotensin II type-2 receptor. In addition, a sympathoinhibition observed with the renin–angiotensin system blockers and particularly demonstrated with eprosartan, may help to explain the better cardiovascular and cerebrovascular protection in comparison with the calcium antagonist nitrendipine

Palabras Claves: Escorpionismo, escorpi?n, antiveneno, epidemiolog?a.Introduction: Scorpionism is known as the inoculation of the scorpion venom in the human body generating manifestations from mild to severe with multisystemic affectation. Objective: To describe the epidemiological and statistical behavior of scorpionism in a third-level care institution in the municipality of Ibagu? Tolima during the years 2010-2017. Materials and methods: An observational, cross-sectional observational epidemiological study was conducted with retrospective information, in patients who presented scorpionism, admitted to a third-level care institution in the municipality of Ibagu? Tolima during the years 2010-2017. Results: The average age of presentation of scorpionism was 35 years. About 96% of patients remained in the emergency and observation area. A 98.6% of patients reported the presence of pain at the site of the bite. Only 30.6% of the total patients were treated with antiscorpionic serum. The age range that most often had cases was between 21 and 40 years with 46 people, 6 children were in intensive care unit (ICU), 5 of them under 1 year and one of 6 to 10 years. Conclusion: The population affected by the scorpionism does not take into account the age or the gender, generally the preventive measures must be one of the pillars to counteract the stings by these arthropods. Highlight the importance of the classification of severity in children under 1 year, since most ended up in PICU (pediatric intensive care unit). Effects of Driving Style on Energy Consumption and CO2 Emissions

    Get PDF
The tractive force developed by energy consumption (EC) in a car engine produces its acceleration and sustains the motion against velocity dependent resistance forces. In internal combustion engines, fuel burning entails pollutant emissions (PE) released into the atmosphere. In vehicular traffic, EC and PE depend on the driving style. This paper assumed that the transition rules in a traffic cellular automata (TCA) represent a driving style, and its effect on EC and PE in TCA is studied. Extending empirical relationships, we proposed models to estimate EC and PE in TCA from the velocity and acceleration distributions, which we obtained by computer simulations for three well-known TCA. The Nagel-Schreckenberg (NS) and Fukui-Ishibashi (FI) models, and a variant (NS+FI) defined by combining the NS and FI rules, were considered. The FI driving style revealed EC and CO2 emission rates dependent on the stochastic delay (p) only for low vehicular densities. We also detected that the larger EC and CO2 emission rates were 45.4 kW and 26.7 g/s with no dependence on p. With NS and NS+FI driving styles, the larger energy consumption and CO2 emission rates occurred for small stochastic delays, 18.4 kW and 6.6 g/s and 61.1kW and 30.2 g/s for p = 0.2. On average, for NS, FI, and NS+FI models (p = 0.2), we obtained energy consumptions of 1.88, 2.60, and 2.76 MJ/km, fuel consumptions of 0.08, 0.12, and 0.13 L/km, and CO2 emissions of 0.158, 0.460, and 0.562 kgCO2/km. Our results agree with those (3.37 MJ/km and 0.235 kgCO2/km) of petrol combustion car engines at 10 km/L. This work may help in designing flow and driving style scenarios to optimize vehicular traffic EC and reduce PE
